We could say that Jesus’s teaching style was not always straightforward. He often answered a question with more questions, or he told parables with layers of meaning that unfold through time. His teachings have been debated endlessly for more than two thousand years, humbling the greatest thinkers and teachers of every age.

But in response to one question, Jesus was perfectly clear: “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” (Mark 12:28). Here, Jesus did not play with words—no further questions, no provoking parables. Instead, he was completely direct:

“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this…‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:29-31)

We may not always know what we ought to do with our days, what is morally correct in an increasingly complex world, or how the Lord is calling us to spend our talents or our lives. But when all of that is overwhelming, we can return to these, the greatest commandments: love God, and love your neighbor as yourself. Love is a lens through which we see every question. Love is a measure by which we discern the worth of every activity. Love is the standard by which we live our lives.
